Out in the West Texas desert last year Greyhounds came up with a song they couldn’t quite finish. As Greyhounds’ guitarist Andrew Trube recalls, “We started writing Without You in Marfa, but the lyrics never quite seemed complete.”
The song may not have been ready for that recording session (“Adobe,” released 2022), but when the band returned to Austin they continued a conversation with Sir Woman, who they had been in touch with about a potential collaboration. Suddenly the missing lyrics—and missing voice—were found, with Sir Woman (Kelsey Wilson) and Greyhounds’ keyboardist/vocalist Anthony Farrell merging to create the smoky, soulful, love-lost duet that is Without You.
“Working with Sir Woman was a great experience,” says Farrell. “While being sure of herself and knowing what she wants artistically, Kelsey also has a talent for leaving room so others can make their creative contribution.”
Without You showcases the collaboration between Greyhounds and Sir Woman and the chemistry between Greyhounds’ founding duo Andrew Trube and Anthony Farrell, as Farrell’s lead vocal and keyboard arrangements are complimented by Trube’s sparse, poignant guitar.
As Farrell explains, “Any collaboration is a delicate balance. It is a challenge to let go of preconceived ideas and rely more on one’s own instincts as well as those of your co-creators. But when you do surrender to the process, beautiful things can happen.”
